On Wednesday, September 3 we had our first school event at Clarenceville Middle School in Livonia, Michigan. Clarenceville Middle School serves 383 children within the sixth, seventh and eighth grade. We worked closely with Mrs. Hilton, the school’s reading interventionist, who loaned her room for the day for our book fair.

The student leaders were excited to help set up the 2500 plus books that Making Spirits Bright brought. They helped bring the books in from our trailer and helped separate the books into their appropriate categories. We brought various chapter books, young adult books, non fiction books, and journals for the 6th – 8th grade students.

Kids spent 15 minutes during their English class shopping for their new books. As they walked into the classroom the volunteers were greeted with smiles and waves. Many kids were excited to see the quality of the new books and were very eager for the graphic novels and comic style books. They were so polite and thanked the volunteers for their new books, bookmark, and book bag.

Mrs. Hilton was such a treat to work with. She knows her student population so well and the kids greeted her and the volunteers with warm hugs and smiles. She made sure the kids were picking appropriate books. Her classroom was a safe haven for many students. Clarenceville Middle School is lucky to have an educator like Mrs. Hilton.
At the end of the day, Making Spirits Bright were able to leave all leftover books. Mrs. Hilton shared that there were a few new teachers at Clarenceville Middle School and that she would allow these teachers to shop for books to build their classroom library. Our first book fair of the school year was a success and we are so grateful for our volunteers, Paula, Joanne, Ashley, and Lindsay that made it a success!
