As a little girl April was the month I looked forward to the most. Like most kids your birthday month is well, something to be celebrated. I think as we get older, we still feel a special connection to things we did when we were kids, we just have a unique perspective on it.
Now every April, I feel the sense of getting more connected to the sense of going back to what gave me joy as a child. April is also the month of Children’s Picture Book Day on April 2nd. This day reminds us how young readers get started. It’s some of the first words that children will read or the first characters they will ever come to love. “Children’s Picture Book Day celebrates these and thousands of other books that parents have read and shared with their children to encourage literacy and stimulate the growth of their imagination.”
Here are six ideas how you can celebrate Children’s Picture Book Day:
· Visit your local library or a bookstore.
· Encourage children to make their own picture books.
· Donate children’s books that are no longer being used.
· Explore picture books from around the world.
· Hold a book-themed party.
· Volunteer at with Making Spirits Bright 😊
There are so many ways to encourage early reading. Making Spirits Bright has brought me back to when I was a child in school. I was so excited for books and the opportunity to find a new world or meet new characters.
Volunteering at Making Spirits Bright and watching the experiences of the kids, volunteers, and teachers is such a gift to me. The opportunity to volunteer has given me energy simply by watching children select their very own books to take home.
Now with my 40th birthday coming up, I am volunteering on that day with my 12-year-old son at a school close to our house. This is what April is about to me now. Showing my children that the celebration of your birthday can be anything you want. It’s even better when you are showing up for someone else and giving them the gift of being a forever reader.
