Today we present one of our partners Hospitality House in Walled Lake!
Hospitality House is a food pantry program helping combat hunger in families since 2002; “The mission of Hospitality House is to minimize deprivation in our community by providing food and assistance to those in need, while maintaining the utmost respect for the dignity of the individual.” They have programs to help with their mission: Client-Choice Food Pantry and Weekend Food Programs. Just last year, they helped 850 households and have been giving away about 70,000 pounds of food monthly, and it’s projected that they’ll continue to increase their reach in the coming years!
Hospitality House offers two main programs, Client-Choice Food Pantry and the Weekend Food Programs. With the client-choice food pantry, qualifying families are allowed to shop in their store twice per month. The area is laid out as a mini food market! Families are allowed to pick out items that Hospitality House offers, like various… produce like fruits, vegetables, meats, etc. They decided on this method to ensure families maintain their dignity while also being able to obtain food items they truly want. Apart from food items, Hospitality House provides everyday necessities as well! This one pit stop allows families to receive items they need without worrying about searching for other areas!
Apart from the client-choice food pantry they also have a Weekend Food program! This program specifically caters to pre-K through 12th graders. Many families are unable to provide food to their families during the weekends; This program strives to help those in need. On Fridays, students discreetly receive a drawstring bag, in the bag there are various food items for students to provide for their families on the weekends. Currently, only Walled Lake Consolidated School District is a part of this program; however, there are plans for expansion in the following years. Just in 2023, 345 students were being served weekly!
These programs are such a great help for families, but YOU can help also! There are various ways to help: donations, food drives, and volunteering are some of the ways to help. To volunteer visit this webpage to register. There are various ways to donate: online donations, mailing a check, legacy gifting, drop-off food, seasonal items, etc.
Making Spirits Bright has two book shelves at the Hospitality House food bank. We stock the shelves every two weeks for families to choose gently used books to take home. We give out an average of 300 books a month.
