How I Got Involved with Making Spirits Bright: A Journey of Books and Giving Back
Books have always been a big part of my life. As an avid reader, I’ve found inspiration, comfort, and joy in stories for as long as I can remember. But becoming a parent deepened my understanding of the true power of books. I quickly realized that reading to my kids wasn’t just a way to pass the time, it was one of the most important things I could do to help them grow.
When I held my newborn sons, reading to them felt like the most natural thing in the world. I’d watch their little eyes trying to focus on the pictures in the board books, knowing that those moments were laying the foundation for their future literacy. As they grew, reading together became more than just a routine; it helped them build vocabulary, spark their imaginations, and learn about the world around them. I saw how important those moments were, and I knew I wanted to help other kids experience the same thing.
When I learned about Making Spirits Bright, an organization that collects gently used books and distributes them to Title I schools through free book fairs, I knew I wanted to be involved. The heart of the mission is simple yet powerful, recycle gently used books and get them into the hands of children who might not otherwise have access to them. It really resonated with me.
We often take for granted the shelves full of books in our homes, but for many kids, the only books they see are the ones at school. By bringing free books to these children, we’re offering more than just reading material; we’re offering them the chance to open doors to new worlds and brighter futures.
Whether we’re organizing book drives, sorting donations, or hosting book fairs, I’ve seen firsthand the difference it makes for kids. One of the most memorable moments for me was the first time I helped a child choose five free books at one of our book fairs. It wasn’t just about the books, it was about the excitement and pride they felt knowing those books now belonged to them and they got to take them home. That moment stayed with me, reminding me why this work matters.
Another aspect I love about Making Spirits Bright is the sense of community. It’s not just about the books; it’s about the people who come together to make it happen. From volunteers and donors to school administrators and staff, everyone plays a role in making these book fairs a success. It’s a beautiful reminder that even small acts of kindness, like donating a few books, can make a big impact on a child’s life.
Joining the board of Making Spirits Bright has been more fulfilling than I imagined. The mission is simple but essential, ensuring that every child has access to the books that can help them grow, learn, and dream big. Each book donated, each fair held, brings us closer to a world where all children have the opportunity to read and learn.
I believe that every child deserves the chance to experience the joy of reading. If you’ve ever felt the excitement of getting lost in a good book, I encourage you to get involved with organizations like Making Spirits Bright. Whether you donate books, volunteer, or spread the word, you can make a difference. Books are more than just stories, they’re keys that unlock brighter futures.
And to me, that’s what makes it all worth it.
