“Mom, tell Maria I want to volunteer at the free book fair,” my 11-year-old said as he races out the door to the bus stop! This wasn’t the first time he had asked me to sign him up—and I knew better not take too long.
Harper became interested in volunteering last April after overhearing me talk about my experience book sorting at Making Spirits Bright.
He got involved during a school break when we spent time sorting books by genre. And I have to admit—that boy nailed it! Harper takes his role as a book sorter seriously and values his fellow volunteers. Each time we volunteer together, I step back and let him take the lead, sharing his knowledge with others and explaining the steps needed to complete sorting tasks.
Over the past year, this proud mom has watched her son willingly give his time to this nonprofit. He has participated in our open house, explained to others what it means to recycle old, beat-up books, learned various aspects of our adult-aged used bookstore on eBay, joined me for family literacy night, and loves speaking among his peers—sharing his favorite titles at free book fairs.
Selfishly, this experience has given me invaluable time with my child. And in the process, I’ve watched him develop a sense of purpose. He loves helping and has even encouraged his friends to join him.
When Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt or Uncle declare FAMILY TIME! I invite all of you to join Making Spirits Bright for just two hours—it’s time well spent. The connection you build with your loved ones through volunteering is truly priceless.
